Easy Home Makeover Projects: Part 1 – Painting The House

In the past several weeks I’ve alluded to all the home improvement projects we’ve been working on. Now my husband I are getting ready to share some of those. I say my husband and I because in the future we’ll be having some contributing posts from Mr. Simply Sweet Home on his fields of expertise, and believe me, when it comes to tools and fixing things, it’s definitely his field of expertise and not mine.  But as long as he thinks that I look cute trying, I feel good about it!  And believe me, I DO TRY!

I decided to make this part of a series on Easy Home Makeover Projects.  When it comes to home improvement, I find that a little goes a long way, and when you look at your home and try to divide the work in to a series of small projects here and there, rather than looking at it as one big never ending project, it definitely makes the work easier, and it takes all the pressure off!

Indoor Air Pollution and Solutions

These days we spend about 90% of our time indoors, and with more and more pollutants in the air, the risk or becoming sick from substances in our own home is ever-growing!  Fortunately, we can work do combat these.

The first step is knowing what the sources of pollution are:  25% of indoor pollution comes from sources outside the home, while other indoor pollution comes from a variety of sources like mold, mildew, asbestos, radon, dust and carbon monoxide.  Even everyday items in our home that you can don’t really think about can cause indoor air pollution: pet fur and dander, chlorine from the shower, and fumes from beauty products. Top Natural Cleaning Tips

A lot of people have recently been switching to natural or environmentally/eco friendly cleaning products. If you are someone who wants to be environmentally friendly with your cleaning, natural products can be just as effective. Here are our top tips for spotless natural cleaning!

Red wine removal

One of life’s most tricky cleaning endeavors, unless dealt with properly, red wine stains can be disastrous and some can often result in professional carpet cleaning. However if you act fast, dousing with soda water and dabbing with layers of paper towel. The bubbles in the soda water can be really affective at lifting the wine. Continue doing this until no residue is left on the towel.

Laundry Smells

Laundry baskets can often get a little…fragrant. However lining them with paper towels that have been sprinkled with some natural oils (such as lavender or tee tree) will keep the laundry basket (and importantly surrounding areas!) at bay

Windows

This is an excellent tip we got from Kim and Agie but you don’t need abrasive chemicals for window cleaning – mixing 25% vinegar with 75% warm water will have them sparkling clean. Remove all residue with a towel afterwards so no vinegary smells are left.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a natural, non toxic and cheap product that can be incredible for cleaning! It can be used in lots of rooms and for multiple purposes. For example a small pot of baking soda in any bins, fridges or cupboards will keep away potentially unpleasant food odors. Baking soda can also be used to clean sides and surfaces by just sprinkling on the side and wiping with a warm water towel – the same also applies for silver – rubbing a baking soda paste on to it is excellent for making your silver wear sparkling and shiny!

Lemon

Lemon also makes a great natural cleaner. Infuse with vinegar for a couple of weeks for a fresh smelling natural cleaner that works perfectly for cleaning windows or floors.

Stock up on lots of vinegar, lemons and baking soda and you will find natural cleaning more easier and more effective than you ever thought!

Don’t you just love doing laundry?  As far as chores go, I think laundry is something that you either love or hate.  I actually don’t mind it most of the time.  First of all, it’s a chore that you can actually see noticeable results from; I love nothing more than to pull a fresh load of nice clean clothes from the dryer and then restock the drawers and closets around the house.  Something about it makes me feel warms inside.  Secondly I’ve got a pretty good system down when it comes to doing laundry, and my system and the way all the clothes are already pre-sorted for me, just makes the whole chore pretty easy!  In fact, laundry is the one chore with which I absolutely want NO HELP from my husband. (No offense to him or any one else; I just have certain ways I like to do things!) [Read more…]

5 Kitchen Tips from my Hubby

Each day my husband and I are pressed with one big question: What are we going to eat?

Sometimes getting all our meal fixed is one of the biggest challenges of the day, but I have a few things I do to make it less challenging. First of all, I have a husband who loves being in the kitchen and is happy.  Secondly, my family loves convenience foods, so a few nights a week I get to just heat up pre-cooked items from the freezer.  Stouffer’s is one of my go-to brands for this! Craft your own Crafting Studio

The art of crafting and making things has now become a hobby that can be pursued for non-essential reasons. Whether you scrapbook or do pottery, making crafts allows you to make and preserve memories, and offer a fun hobby that can be done in your spare time. In addition, this is an activity that can be done with family and friends to help build personal bonds.

One difficult aspect of crafting is that it can be very messy. Small strips of paper, glue, paint, clay; these are just a few of the messier substances that you might be working with. It gets even worse if you have to use the kitchen or living room as your workspace. For those that have this problem, one idea that they turn to is to have a space in their home dedicated to making crafts. This is a great solution to allow for all the necessary space, as well as provide a permanent space that you won’t need to worry about cleaning up all the time.

Whether you are just getting started at crafting or you’ve been doing it for years; the two most important things when creating a custom craft studio is both the area you work in, as well as the equipment that you use. Here are a few ideas to help with your own home studio:

Where you work

Your crafting workspace can have a big effect on the type and quality of crafts that you create. When choosing an area for your studio, keep in mind the proximity to other areas of the house. You don’t want your work spilling over into the living room or kitchen, and you don’t want to be distracted while you are creating your masterpiece. Garages, basements, and unused bedrooms are all great spaces that allow for good proximity.

Another detail that you’ll want to think about is the lighting. Sitting in a darkroom with no windows is not helpful to the creative process. Make sure that you have windows, or a way to allow for plenty of lighting to stir your creative mind.

Finally, allow for good use a space within your studio. A cluttered crafting area can make it difficult to find things, and to work if you are constantly having to step over a mess. Organizing your area so that your tools and materials can be located easily is important. To do this make use of organizational structures (shelves, racks, etc.) to get the maximum amount of space for your area.

What you’ll need

With so many different crafts available for you to make, it is almost impossible to narrow the essential tools you’ll need down to a workable number. However, for the most part the tools you’ll need are the tools you’d need for an art class. Some things you might need to get you started are paper, pencils, markers, paint, hole-punch, jeweler’s pliers, cutting mat, and a paper cutter for crafting projects. The possibilities are endless, and depend a lot on what type of artisan you are.

In addition to the mundane tools that can be found inside of most craft studios, your craft studio might need something special. Working with wood, glass, and metal can be dangerous work, and require some extra safety equipment in addition to the extra tools. These things can easily be found on-line if there is not a craft store near you.

The best part about crafting is that anybody can do it. You don’t need special tools or a studio, you can make something great with just some paper and a few markers. However, for serious crafters having your own studio can be a huge benefit. Make sure your workspace has all the necessary tools and safety equipment, and allows your creative juices to flow.
