What will happen if I quit drinking

What will happen if I quit drinking?

Are you thinking of becoming a teetotaler? Most people consider quitting alcohol to be extremely hard. It requires lots of determination and discipline to stop drinking. However, the results are always worth it. Drinking alcohol, whether excessively or in moderation, affects the body, both physically and mentally. We experience cognitive impairment, memory issues, slurred speech, health deterioration and an assortment of undesired issues. Gladly, you can regain your health and wellbeing once you quit drinking and start living a sober lifestyle.

Here are 4 things that will happen once you quit drinking:

  • Increased energy levels

Once you quit drinking, you will experience some remarkable benefits right away. First, the incessant morning hangovers and migraines will stop. The dark circles that usually appear underneath your eyes will cease. Since alcohol contains excessive sugar levels, it causes a surge in cholesterol and blood sugar levels among revelers. Alcohol also impedes your ability to perform optimally at work since it is a known depressant. People who abstain from drinking alcohol usually experience a dramatic reduction in blood cholesterol and sugar levels. They also report having elevated energy levels and improved performance in their daily activities.

  • Reduced risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and cancer

Studies suggest that drinking too much alcohol increases the production of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the body. The body deposits LDL on arteries which leads to blockage and high blood pressure. Alcohol is also listed as a carcinogen by the U.S. National Toxicology Program, meaning that it can potentially cause cancer among regular drinkers. The more alcohol you drink, the higher your chances of developing different types of cancers. These include breast, liver, colorectal, esophageal and neck cancer. Quitting alcohol will dramatically reduce your risk of contracting cancer and cardiovascular ailments.

  • Better sleep quality

Some people drink alcohol to forget their sorrows and sleep. Although it may help you fall asleep, alcohol will likely cause poor sleep quality due to increased night disturbances. Drunkards often lack crucial REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep that helps the body to get revitalized and restored. Consequently, they often wake up feeling exhausted and restless. Poor sleep quality not only causes greater fatigue but also leads to concentration issues, loss of memory and reduced cognitive function. When you stop drinking, you will enjoy improved quality of sleep and increased focus throughout the day.

  • Consistent weight loss

Alcoholic drinks are notoriously high in calories. One bottle of wine contains upwards of 600 calories. On average, beer contains about 150 calories per bottle. When ingested, the body stores all those calories as fat around the waistline. Excessive alcohol consumption could cause the development of potbellies which are unattractive to look at. It could also lead to the formation of visceral fat which is essentially the accumulation of fat cells around the liver, kidneys and other internal body organs. This type of fat increases inflammation and elevates the risk of contracting lifestyle diseases such as diabetes. When you quit alcohol, you’ll experience gradual weight loss and enjoy a wide variety of health benefits that accrue.

Quitting alcohol is an important step towards better health and an improved quality of life.

The Unbeatable Benefits Of Having A Standby Generator At Home

Electricity is an essential part of everyday life. Hardly anything runs without electricity nowadays and ensuring that you have a dependable source of power can be profitable for your home. The national grid, especially when under maintenance, can at times make you go through a dark phase in life, literally. It might also be a result of poor weather conditions that affect electric poles and other electricity infrastructures.

Power surges can be straining and costly in whatever weather conditions. But they can take a toll on you during cold weather conditions. The last thing anyone would want is to be stuck in a house on a cold winter night without heating. While there exist various alternatives to electricity, there’s something about standby generators that make them a worthwhile investment. They’re made to take over in the case of a sudden electrical outage and serve your needs just as well as a connection to the national grid would. You can check out wattsourcer.com for a guide on the top generators to fit your needs.

Let’s get right to it, shall we? Below are the unbeatable benefits of having a standby generator at home.

1. They Are Reliable

When you install a standby generator that turns on automatically in the event of a blackout, you continue to enjoy the luxuries you’d get when your house runs on electricity. If you are living in a high-risk neighborhood, you’ll want to ensure that your security lights are always juiced up come sunshine or high waters. A blackout will leave your alarms and anti-burglary security system off. This means investing in a reliable standby generator that has the qualities to match its reputation. In line with expert technicians at Ablesales.com.au, it’s important to check on the generator’s power output as this can have an impact on the types of utilities used in case of a power outage. Among other factors that you’ll need to consider when investing in the right standby generator include:

  • The basic sizing of the engine
  • Ease of use
  • Quality
  • Clean energy production
  • Ease of installation
  • Warranty

If you invest in a modern up to date standby generator, you won’t have to worry about refueling it over and over. This is especially the case when using a gas-powered generator that can easily be hooked up to your gas lines, saving you the time it takes to refuel, and providing you with the peace of mind you deserve.

2. Uninterrupted Power Supply to Your Basic Utilities

Standby generators can provide power for almost all your house needs from the AC to your refrigeration depending on the generator’s size and the output capacity. This will help to ensure that your comfort is not in any way compromised while at the same time, ensuring that the crucial utilities in your house are running. Standby generators can go for days powering your house, whatever your power consumption needs are. But then again, it all depends on the type of generator you choose to invest in.

Below are different types of standby power generators for home use. They include:

  • Gas standby generators – Gas-powered standby generators run solely on natural gas or propane gas. This means that they’ll not need to be refilled from time to time. In addition to this, they run smoothly, are more efficient, and are safer for the environment.
  • Bi-fuel generators – These can use different sources of fuel and by using the best of both worlds, it means that you’ll never run out of options when it comes to fuel.
  • Diesel generators – These are the types that you’ll find being used in most industries. As the name suggests, they run solely on diesel. While they might be efficient and all, they typically require refills from time to time. This is not cost-effective and it also wastes time. The emissions from diesel generators are not what you would call safe to the environment. They are also expensive to maintain and the reason why most people would consider generators that utilize alternative fuels.

3. Modern Standby Generators Are Much Safer

Whenever there is a power outage, standby generators create a smooth power transition from the grid and protect your home from dangerous voltage fluctuations. They also protect against power surges after a blackout ensuring that you keep your electronics running until a stable amount of voltage is achieved. This is good at keeping your electronics from being fried.

Whether it’s during disasters or emergencies, a standby generator’s output will not be hindered. You can continue using one when you need it the most. Depending on the type of generator, you may not need extension cords connected to your generator. Modern generators will stay connected to your main power source meters. This is key in ensuring that there are no mishaps with wrong connections and this will ultimately prevent the risks of having naked wires lying around which can be dangerous.

4. Cost Saving

While it may cost you in installing one, the long-term benefits cannot be quantified. Standby generators will ensure that you’ll never have to endure the long hours of blackout. You’ll no longer have to rent a motel or hotel after a power outage, meaning that you’ll rest in your familiar surroundings. This will in the long run save you a lot of money. You’ll also save on appliance replacement costs seeing that having one will protect your appliances from damage during extended blackouts.

5. They Keep You on Your Toes

With a standby generator, you can keep working on your projects no matter the time of day or night. This is true in every sense in an age where most people are working remotely. A standby generator will also be useful to patients who require power for support using various health support gadgets. This will make it easier to administer treatment even in the event of a power surge

As you can see, you cannot deny the importance of having a backup generator installed at your house. Nonetheless, you need to ensure that the installation is performed by a reputable, licensed, insured, and credible contractor. You don’t want your generator to fail you when you need it the most.

Winning The Fight With Themselves: Helping Your Child With Insecurity Problems

We’ve all been there, and we understand just how difficult it can be. When we are going through adolescence, we feel we are in it on our own. And nobody can help us. And the great benefit we all have as parents is that we have been there, but we know just how impenetrable we were when our parents tried to help us. When it comes to helping our children deal with their Jar Of Insecurities, in some respects, our children don’t want us to help, but at the same time, they will easily reprimand us for not supporting them. And when our children need our help, they won’t necessarily tell us right away. Adolescence is, for everyone, an insecure and anxiety-inducing time. So what can we, as parents, do to help our child when they feel anxious or insecure?

Remember Empathy

We have to know when we can step in and support our children. There will be times that they will have to fight their own battles. But we also need to realize when our children need space. As parents, our job is to reassure and not overreact to scenarios. There are so many parents out there that can become those helicopter parents. Being a helicopter parent is someone who is going to dive in at any given moment. While it comes from a good place, it’s not going to help our children to fight their battles. When it comes to insecurity, we need to take a couple of steps back to see what the main issue is. There will be times that our children are insecure over an aesthetic issue. And we may feel that this is something not worth being upset over, but this is when empathy truly comes into its own.

We’ve got to think back about those times when we were incredibly self-conscious about that tooth or our spots. The great thing is that there are things that we can do to help solve this problem for them. If your child has an issue with one of their teeth, they can go to a dentist, and there are fantastic treatments to reduce spots. And we have the benefit of hindsight to not think so much about aesthetic issues, but when we were children, it meant the world to us, and we have to remember this.

Look At Your Own Anxieties And Insecurities Too!

Something that we can all forget as parents is how we react to our children. If our children feel self-conscious about something that we don’t deem as important and we make light of this, it could very well cause a complex or make their issues worse. We need to check ourselves and monitor our behavior around our children. But it’s also important to understand if we are giving off something untoward.

We have to remember back to when our children were babies and that they were able to pick up on our anxieties and insecurities. This would, in turn, stress them out. But rather than having a crying baby or someone who was prone to meltdowns, now you’ve got a child who is internalizing all sorts of stresses which is not healthy in the slightest! The most important thing to remember when you are addressing issues with your children is you all think differently. You’re not able to change your child’s feelings towards a situation, but you have the benefit of being able to help them.

Giving Them The Tools To Manage Insecurity

For any child growing up, there will be times when they won’t want their parents to be involved. This could very well be because they want to be accepted by their peers, or they feel that as parents, we just “don’t understand.” And this means that we’ve got to take a step back, but if we want our children to solve their problems, we must figure out the tools that they need. It can be all too close to home. If we look at our children handling the situation and it reminds us of when we were their age, our instinct can be to protect them. But instead, it’s the ideal opportunity to look at what you think you could have benefited from when you were their age and subtly give them those tools. And remember, if your children don’t want you to help, this means you’ve got to become an adept psychologist. Think about how you can get your children to absorb certain information. This is when it’s time to get creative.

If your children won’t listen to you, but they want help, you could very easily go for professional advice. Or on the other hand, you could turn to television. While television is something that isn’t always going to help, it’s important that when our children don’t want our support or our involvement we’ve got to find other ways to influence them to change their behavior. Finding lessons in popular culture is, in many ways, a very surreptitious way to help your children through problems. But it’s something that we can all take comfort from. A great example is something like The Simpsons. There are so many episodes that can help our children through anxiety issues that all we’ve got to do is find these episodes and put them on in the background, and something may filter through to our children.

Learning To Improve Emotional Intelligence

We can look at our children’s problems and think that they amount to nothing, but when we think back to how we were when we were their age, it was everything. And this means that if we want to help our children gain some perspective on the situation, we can help them to normalize their feelings of anxiety. It’s important that we, as parents, need to stay objective. They shouldn’t feel that what they are saying is silly or pointless, but it’s about normalizing their anxieties and making them remember and feel that everybody goes through these things. And there are cliches that we can dish out at this point such as “everybody is in the same boat,* but when we start to bring out the cliches, it falls on deaf ears. It is far better for us to help our children through these issues by encouraging their ability to empathize with others, gain perspective, and objectivity.

At the same time, we have to remember that we can’t tell our children to be mature about it all. After all, our children haven’t developed emotional maturity like we (supposedly) have. But what we can do is help them to look at things from different points of view and to truly think about these things. When we go through problems, we can internalize them but also be selfish about it and think that nobody else has ever gone through these things. But this is the part of being a parent where you’ve got to put in the hard graft and realize that it takes time. When our children have anxieties over something like giving a presentation, they will end up giving so many different presentations throughout their education that, after a while, we can help them to learn something new each and every time. But this means that we’ve got to be the helpful and supportive parents by learning to cement the bond with our children over time.

When our children feel insecure or anxious about something, it will feel like the world is caving in, and when we try to help, our instinct is to take over. But the most important battle that our children will ever go through, in terms of insecurity, is the battle with themselves. That’s not to say we shouldn’t help our children, but we must remember the importance of developing resilience.

How To Prepare For A House Move

Preparing to move home can be a chaotic time, there’s so much to get done and only so many hours in the day. To help you ease the chaos and enjoy the process, it’s vital to get yourself organized.

1 . Out with the old

When you’re preparing to move home, you should get rid of all the old items that you no longer need. The last thing you want to do is clutter up your new house with old junk! Tackle your clutter room by room, and put all the items you don’t want to one side. It’s a great idea to donate these to your local charity store. This way you’ll be helping a good cause and ensuring that these materials are not wasted. If you have large items, you might want to use a house clearance company to help you dispose of these in an eco-friendly way. If you have old electronic items, you’ll need to give these to a registered e-waste recycling service.

2. Pack up early

It’s best to start packing early, to ensure you aren’t stressed out and in a rush. Start with the rooms that you don’t use as often, and leave your frequently used items until the last minute. It’s also a good idea to pack early so you can let your moving company know how many items you have to move. Doing so will help you to get an accurate quote and budget this with the rest of your moving costs. When you’re doing your packing and cleaning, apps like Toddy can help you to organize your tasks.

3. Write an inventory

Write up an inventory of all of your items; this will help you to keep track of everything and ensure that nothing gets lost in the process. It’s best to check if your moving company has an insurance policy or if you’ll need to get one to cover your belongings.

4. Organise your bills

Now is the time to organize your bills, you will need to inform your internet company, water company and gas company that you are moving house. You might take the opportunity to search for a new provider to save money on your bills. If you are happy with your current companies and tariffs, you might choose to take these same providers to your new property. You should also inform your banks and any other services of your new address.

5. Choose a removal company

Research moving companies before you commit to a service. It’s best to look for a company with lots of experience and great reviews. Write down any questions that you have to ask your removal company, whether about insurance, packing, or duration. It’s handy to have a budget in mind before you start looking for moving companies.

Lastly, remember to pre-order the new things you’ll need for your new house. Whether it’s new curtains or carpets, you’ll want to make your house more homely as soon as you can!

The Essential Guide To Home Organization

While you might think that your home is well-coiffed, full of wonderful decor ideas and a true reflection of your personality, this doesn’t mean that your humble abode is well organized. Clutter within the home can cause clutter in the mind. While it may sound a little odd, living in a messy environment can cause you to suffer from acute bouts of stress and anxiety. By clearing your living spaces and having a more airy, light and free atmosphere, your mental health will respond in kind. You don’t have to have a sterile, sparse and boring home. You simply need to free your house from junk, and ensure that the ornaments and knick-knacks that you adore to see around you have an allocated place whether this is a bookshelf or some other form of storage.

Being organized may sound simple, but it can be hard to transfer this skill into our homes. If you need to declutter your home and you need some storage solution ideas to inspire your re-organization plans, check out this essential home organization guide.

The Living Room

This central space is the area where the whole family congregates in the evening to relax, kick back and watch TV, and enjoy one another’s company. It’s all too easy for this hub of the home to begin to look untidy and chaotic. If you have little people living in the home, you might be sick of the stray train set sticking out from under the sofa and the other toys lurking on the floor. It can be tough to work out how best to store kids’ stuff. Baskets are a good option as they can often be deep and sit well within bookcases. Square shaped storage units are also effective, as they fit cubed boxes inside to store away soft teddies and bulky shaped toys. Alternatively, you might want to make a feature of a toy box within your living room, which may even double up as a coffee table.

Don’t just assume that it is only your floor that can look messy. Wall spaces can become scuffed with heavy traffic moving in and out of the room. Get a magic eraser style cleaning cloth to scrub these away. If your walls are cluttered with artwork and photos, think about streamlining the gallery. Consider investing in some custom picture frames to give your black and white shots of London and your kids artwork some more uniformity. This can neaten up your wall space without breaking the bank.

The Kitchen

It doesn’t take much at all to make a kitchen look untidy. A few too many plates in the sink, crumbs on the worktop and overflowing pot drawers can make you feel less than enthusiastic about cooking up a feast. It can be challenging to work out an organization system for your utensils, gadgetry and kitchen tools. If you have a drawer of doom that houses everything that doesn’t have a home, you need to banish this forever. Everything within your kitchen needs a home.

Head into your cupboards and look at all of your cans and dry goods. Anything out of date needs chucking. Anything in date but that you will never eat can be donated to a food bank. There are many can carousels that can help you increase the storage capacity of your cupboards by intuitively storing your tuna, beans and tinned veg. You could also find some great Tupperware options for pasta and rice storage. Think of cupboard re-organization as a game of Tetris. It takes a bit of practice but you will prevail.

If you have excess pots and pans and you cannot streamline them too much because you adore cooking, then why not invest in some hooks or floating shelves? These can accommodate a range of pans and utensils. This is a good option if you want to maintain a clear space on your worktop.

Get Rid Of Dangerous Items Around Your Home

When you’re trying to get your home organized, it’s important to get rid of any dangerous items first. This will help keep you safe as you work, and it will also make the project go more smoothly. There are many different types of dangerous items that can be found in a home, but we’ll focus on the most common ones here.

Dangerous Items That Can Be Found in a Home: There are many different types of dangerous items that can be found in a home. Some common ones include knives, sharp objects like scissors or box cutters, dangerous chemicals such as bleach or ammonia (which should always be kept out of reach from children), as well as poisons and drugs like prescription medications which may not have been properly stored away by their owners at some point during their lives before your current project began. If these things are left lying around the house without proper care being taken for them when they’re still needed then there’s no telling what could happen – so make sure everything is put away safely after using it once again so that nothing gets lost!

The Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a haven of relaxation where you can rest your weary bones and get a restful night’s sleep. All too often, our bedrooms can turn into a giant clothes horse. If you have lots of clothes, it’s time to store them away. Fitted wardrobes, while expensive, can utilize every iota of space in your room, even using the eaves if you are in the roof space of your home. Sometimes, our clothes are excessive and we need to streamline them. If you are the sort of person who heads out to the shops, purchases outfits like they are going out of fashion and then puts them in a drawer complete with the labels on never to wear them, you need to think about shifting them.

Head onto eBay and list any new and unworn items of clothing that you have. They will find a strong price, especially if you have designer tops or dresses. eBay is a common online auction site that can help you to make some extra cash while re-organizing your home.

In the kids’ bedrooms, you might be pulling your hair out at the amount of junk and stuff in their rooms. For teenagers, their rooms are their private spaces so it can be difficult for you to even enter them, but the smell may suggest that they are not that clean. Bargain with your child, offering up some extra Internet time or a trip to the cinema in exchange for them tidying their room. Inspect how they get on and then suggest a trip to the furniture store to pick up a new bookcase or a chest of drawers to put away excess clothing or books.

The Bathroom

If you are struggling with storage in your bathroom, consider adding a vanity cupboard beneath your basin. This can add space to store toilet rolls, cleaning products and toiletries. Many bathrooms are small, so it can be tricky to work out how to store your beauty products. Even a simple mirror swap can help. Think about a vanity mirror or a mirror with a shelf underneath it. This tiny shelf can store shower creme, shaving foam and razors. A tiny adjustment to a tiny room can be impactful.

Garage

If you have a garage then you need to put the work in to get that organised as well. Organising your garage can be hard work, mainly because that’s where you dump all the stuff you have no place for. If you want to get this area organised, then you need to try and throw away as much stuff as possible. You need to get rid of anything that you haven’t touched in the last 6 months or so, as this will give you the fresh start you need to really organise your space. Investing in some nice stackable storage boxes is also a good idea, along with trying to make sure that you have drawers for all of your knick-knacks. When everything is nice and organised, you may even want to think about adding some impact garage doors to make it look like a new and functional space for your car.

The key to organization is storage and the ability to declutter effectively. Don’t hoard, focus on the decluttering job and go room by room methodically organizing your living areas so that they are tidy, light and airy.

3 Home Décor Ideas for Gifted Kids

Choosing the right ambiance and décor for your child’s bedroom can encourage him or her to sleep better and study more. Even if your kid is gifted, he or she may need a little assistance to reach their full potential. Here are some helpful home décor ideas for kids with capabilities for high performance.

1. Let Your Child Make Some Decorating Decisions

Along with being unusually intelligent, gifted kids often have a wide range of interests. If yours wants to display their rock collection, paint a mural on one wall, or get furniture in their favorite color, help make that a reality. When they can choose the décor they want and pick out comfortable furniture, they’ll feel less distracted and more at home. Better yet, if they enjoy studying in their room or another part of your home, they’ll do it more often and learn faster.

Some gifted children are sensitive to sounds or the textures of certain fabrics. For example, a creaky chair with rough upholstery could keep some from focusing on their work. There should also be plenty of lighting and enough soundproofing to eliminate distracting noises.

No matter what decorating style your child chooses, make sure there’s plenty of storage space for toys and other items as well. That way, keeping things neat and teaching your child to put away their toys will be easy. Just put storage spaces for younger kids close to the ground where they can reach them. If they use their room to express their personal style, then they will no doubt be more motivated to keep it looking great.

2. Add a Desk to Your Kid’s Bedroom With access to a comfortable desk, computer and good chair, your child will be able to focus on their schoolwork without worrying about back pain, neck pain or aching wrists. Having a dependable place to do homework will make learning to type, doing research and learning about new subjects easier. Gifted kids can take online courses, help their classmates through video chats, email their teachers and more.

Look for desks and chairs with adjustable heights to make sitting more comfortable for the child in your life who still has some growing to do. Some models also come with cupholders, hooks for headphones and more. Make sure the monitor is at your child’s eye level, and look for one with an anti-glare filter or coating to reduce dry eye and fatigue.

3. Make Enjoying Hobbies Easy

Even if your child has a desk they love, they shouldn’t need to spend all their time there. Instead, they should have some multipurpose space where they can relax, try out new hobbies and have fun when they’re done studying. Many gifted kids get bored easily, as they don’t need to spend as much time on homework as most children.

Giving them the opportunity and space to try new activities will keep them from acting out because of boredom. With that in mind, add a bean bag chair for reading, an easel for painting, a telescope to look at the stars, or other useful things to their bedroom or hangout space.

Allow Your Gifted Kid to Shine Brighter

Letting your gifted child make some of their own decorating decisions, getting them a comfortable desk and providing easy access to supplies and resources for hobbies will help them perform even better in school. These ideas can also help them relax and prevent boredom and stress.

In 2020 Homes Are Coming To Life, Literally

We all know and acknowledge that home automation is an inevitable path the world is set on. For many years, the interior design world has been concerned with style. It believes that it decides which direction the modern home will go in. However, it turns out, the tech sector has more of a say in this than it bargained for. Now, people are more concerned with practicality. It seems like in 2020, function over form is set to rise to new heights. An incredible array of automation technology is splurging out onto the scene. Technology is set to make our lives so much easier, more fun and comfortable, in ways that we didn’t even imagine before. Just 10 years ago, who would have thought that voice-controlled lighting would become the norm? It’s time to look ahead and realize homes are coming to life!

The central nerve system

Mark these words, in 2020, you’ll see an end to home assistant ecosystems. It’s unfortunate, but many companies are creating home assistants that you can only use, with their apps. For example, Amazon Alexa can only be used with the Amazon Smart Home Hub. The same goes for Apple, Google and Samsung devices. This creates an ecosystem that unintentionally, locks the mainstream consumer out. Why do you have to buy products that connect only with each other? That’s why Wink Hub 2 and products like it, are going to become the mainstream’s most popular central nerve system of the contemporary home.

Wink Hub 2, not only connects your at-home smart assistant device but also your lights, locks and sound systems; to name a few. Using the Wink Hub 2 app and your voice, you can change multiple things in your home without ever having to get up. Change the room temperature to be cooler, dim the lights and play some music, all while sitting on your couch. No matter what kind of smart devices you have, they should be compatible with a central hub, and guess what? The more you limit consumers from choosing their own ways of harmoniously connecting all their smart devices, the more you push them away. 2020, is the year in which this will all change.

The most powerful change

There are a plethora of home automation products. Everything in your home can be changed, altered and utilized, however you wish. But, the most powerful change in the home automation space, is the blinds. Now hold on a second, don’t think this is a mere exaggeration. Think about what this means. You can control when and how much natural light enters into your home. The sun itself can be blocked without ever having to move from a sitting or lying down position. In fact, you can make your home into a living thing by fitting such a device to your home.

Somfy is the leading brand in this part of the market. Their boast that child safety is enhanced because there are no hanging loose cords that could entrap and possibly strangle toddlers. It connects to your Wi-Fi and can be operated via your smartphone. You can set your prefered blind angle, so if you would like to have a subtle or acute angle as standard when the blinds are open, it will ‘remember’ this. Since the blinds don’t ever touch each other or rather, lay on top of each other, your blinds will look better for longer. No bending, no scratch marks and no losing of their shape. The blinds are able to be set to a timer. Much like you would set your smartphone to automatically activate a blue light filter at a certain time of day, your Somfy blinds work in exactly the same way.

Security and comfort

Comfort and security, in many respects, are synonymous. You wouldn’t feel comfortable living in an unsafe home and no home that is unsafe is ever comfortable. That’s why systems like the Nest by Google are so important to the world of home automation. This technology takes into account how modern door lock systems don’t always provide a great degree of security. They are able to be practically fooled. Skilled burglars will use forged keys, credit cards and lock picks to enter into homes. But with a professional Nest Installation, you receive a doorbell and door lock.

When someone uses the doorbell, you can use the doorbell’s camera to see who it is. You can move the camera around to look up, down and side to side. Giving you an educated look at what’s going on and who’s outside, you’re less likely to be fooled into opening the door for someone who means you harm. The door lock is digital, and you set a number code to lock and unlock the door. It will lock the door automatically after a set period of time after you’ve shut the door.

However, you’re also getting a thermostat as well as smoke and carbon dioxide detectors. Using the app on your smartphone, set the temperature for your home. Each room is able to be set to its own temperature, giving every member in your household climate control.

A secret defense

Someway, somehow, an uninvited guest has entered into your home. What can you do to protect yourself? With a Wyze Cam of course. This device turns on and records footage it’s surroundings when it hears sound or detects motion. It live streams the 1080p footage straight to your smartphone. To your delight and annoyance, you can watch a burglar inside your home. This gives you the homeowner more leverage with your home insurance company. We all know home insurance companies will haggle with you and drag their feet when it comes to using their services to replace or receive a lump sum. With footage of things being stolen or damaged, you’re much more likely to be compensated as you have undeniable evidence.

Total control

We’ve spoken about how ecosystems are negative because they limit consumer options. But what if you had a brand that encompassed everything? That’s what Control4 is, it makes absolutely everything in the way of mainstream home automation options.

Control4 OS 3 is an ecosystem but at least it incorporates all the major solutions that homeowners want. Yes, it’s unique to the OS platform and that means Android systems are left out of the loop. But you get a list of products that all fall under the Control4 OS 3 Smart Home.

  • Smart lighting
  • Home security
  • Intercom anywhere
  • Home theater
  • Voice control
  • Multi-room audio
  • Universal remote

These products provide a lot of automation for various parts of the home. You control your entertainment systems from one remote. You can control any of the devices with just your voice. You can speak with anyone in the household using the intercom system, but do so anywhere i.e. using your smartphone as the microphone. On top of this, the home security system makes use of HD cameras which you can set up in and around the home. The smart lighting allows you to control the ambient lighting in each room with just a few swipes. If you’re going to jump into a home automation ecosystem, you better bring your trunks and dive all the way.

The best sound system

There are sound system products like Amazon’s Alexa, but let’s be honest. They aren’t specialized products and you can’t expect brilliant sound quality from products that have been designed to be small and portable. The Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar, on the other hand, is a product from a dedicated sound system company. Many believe Sennheiser to be the best sound system manufacturer in the world. Many DJs, music artists and moviemakers in Hollywood, use this brand.

The Ambeo Soundbar is voice-activated and provides 3-D sound for the entire home. It can also be wall-mounted if you’re like to create a home cinema with 360-degree sound. Bear in mind, this system is not designed to be portable but you do get jaw-droppingly good sound quality. With a deep 30Hz bass, 13 high-end drivers and a 5.1.4. sound experience, it offers the most immersive advanced sound on the market right now. It is a little pricey, standing at over $2,400, but you can count on its reliability no matter how loud you bump your music.

Some kind of product for home automation had been on everyone’s wish list for last year. However, the market was smaller than one would hope and not too many affordable options were out there. In 2020, this is set to change as smaller companies are trying hard to break the monopoly that big brands like Google, Samsung and Amazon enjoy. The main home automation areas that you should be concerned about are your lighting, both natural and artificial and home security. Once you get used to having better, more fluid door locks and cameras, as well as lighting styles in the home, you will find it easier to venture out into more things like entertainment. Smart blinds and table lamps are easy to understand and use, start there!

Pest Prevention: How To Keep Unwanted Visitors Away

Hearing scrabbling noises and spotting droppings can be frustrating for homeowners, especially if you thought you were rid of pests for good. The problem with pests is that they are resilient and they multiply rapidly. If you’re keen to keep unwanted visitors away, here are some preventative measures to take now.

Declutter

Spring is always a good time of the year to declutter and clean your home. Decluttering is a way to tidy up and free up space, but it’s also an effective means of reducing the risk of pests. Many animals like to take shelter in secluded, comfortable spaces, and if you’ve got piles of stuff mounting high, your home could become a sought-after spot for rodents and insects. Work through each room methodically, separating out items you want to keep, donate or throw away. Once you’ve removed the piles of stuff you don’t want anymore, find a home for your remaining belongings. Investing in storage boxes, crates and baskets and fitting wall-mounted shelves and units can help to prevent clutter in the future.

Clear your garden

Pests can appear in both your home and your garden. Outside, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of intruders in your backyard. If you’ve knocked down trees in the past, or you have trees that are not in good health, it’s a good idea to look for a tree stump removal expert to lower the risk of termites creating nests close to your property. It’s also wise to clear out sheds and summer houses and to keep an eye out for swarms of bees and other flying insects.

Don’t offer up delicious meals and snacks

One of the driving forces of pest infestations is access to food. If you leave bits of food lying around the kitchen counters, you don’t brush the floor on a regular basis, or you’ve got trash bags lying out in the driveway, you may well find that a hungry visitor sniffs out your home. Make sure you store leftovers in sealed containers, throw away anything you don’t want to keep immediately and wipe down your surfaces and floors daily. Tie trash bags securely and keep them in a sealed bin or a locked bin store.

Look out for early warning signs

Pest problems can escalate quickly, so it’s always beneficial to be vigilant. If you start to hear scratching noises, you see droppings on your floor, or you notice damage to wooden structures in your garden, seek expert advice. Tackling the problem early can help to prevent the situation getting worse, maximize the chances of getting rid of pests in the long-term and save money.

Pests are a common issue for homeowners. Our homes make heavenly havens for unwanted visitors, but there are steps you can take to make them less inviting and appealing. Keep your eyes peeled for warning signs, declutter and keep your home clean and tidy and clear your garden. If you do have any problems, it’s best to contact local pest control experts.
