How to Know When You Need an Electrician

As much as you might be a do-it-yourself type person, if you suspect or know your home is having electrical issues, never attempt to perform the repair yourself. Electricity is nothing anyone should be poking around  unless they are a licensed electrician.

Your home will give you clues if there is an issue. Here are some common problems homeowners experience with the electricity.

1. Outlets and Switches

Faulty wiring is a hidden hazard in a home. If you notice any of your outlets are warm to the touch, that could be a sign of trouble. Outlets should always be cool.

Another sign of faulty wiring is when you hear a buzzing sound near switches or outlets. The buzzing sound could be any number of things, and possibly even harmless. But it’s best not to take chances.

2. Fuse Boxes and Circuit Breakers

Fuse boxes and circuit breakers are like the central nervous system of your home. A problem here could reflect an issue somewhere else in the home. Experiencing problems in these areas could present a hazard to your home.

If you notice singed wires in your fuse box, this is a definite sign of trouble. Get it inspected by an electrician in Turlock, CA (or wherever you are) immediately.

If your circuit breaker is tripping often, you could have faulty circuits. Shut off the power until a professional can arrive to your home.

3. Flickering Lights

Flickering lights when you use an appliance or other electric device are not just the temperament of the home. Something else is going on, and a professional needs to have a look. If wire is deteriorating or a circuit is overloading, it needs to be corrected before it becomes dangerous.

4. Burning Smells or Smoke

If you see smoke coming from the walls or from an appliance, turn the appliance off. The smell of something burning that you can’t locate is equally concerning. Either of these scenarios could be the start of an electric fire and shutting down the power to the home and calling an electrician in Salt Lake City are your next steps.

All of these issues are potentially hazardous and serious. Never put off having your electricity inspected by a  reputable electrician in Salt Lake City if you suspect there is an issue. These problems aren’t going to wait for your convenience before becoming destructive and costly.

Find a reputable electrician in Salt Lake City to take a look if you suspect you may have a problem in your home.

How To Keep Your Windows Clean And Bright

The windows of a home or building play a big role in establishing a first impression. If they’re dirty and dull, they can make the interior of your home appear dark. Cleaning your windows regularly can make a big difference. When your windows are clean, they allow much-needed natural sunlight to flow freely within the space. As more light shines in, it reflects around the room and makes your home appear larger, and the colors come alive.

Fortunately, cleaning your windows is a relatively easy task that you can do on your own. Here are a few tips to make your windows really sparkle:

Have Plenty Of Supplies On Hand

Since you’ll be cleaning the inside and the outside of your windows, it’s a good idea to have separate cleaning supplies. Although both sides of the window will be dirty, the outside of the window will have bird droppings and pollen on it. You wouldn’t want to inadvertently bring in dirt from the outside on a cloth you’re now using to clean the inside of the windows. A reputable site like Clean Home Guide can be the perfect place to shop for home cleaning supplies.

Choose A Cloudy Day

Logically, you don’t want it to be raining. But, when you’re ready to clean your windows, choose a cloudy day. This is because when direct sunlight is streaming through your windows, it can cause your cleanser to dry too quickly. This will only lead to that dreaded streaking that will be tough to remove. When the skies are overcast, there’s less glare on the glass and, therefore, any streaks you have will be easier to locate.

Begin By Cleaning The Frame

Window tracks can get greasy and grimy. To clean the frame and tracks, mix together a bit of vinegar and baking soda. Use a toothbrush to scrub this solution into the tracks, and, then, use a wet rag to clean off any remaining residue. Another product you might try using on the frames is a whitening toothpaste. Just leave it to do its work for a little while, then wipe it off with a wet sponge.

Are your window frames afflicted by heavy rust or mold?  If so, you may need something stronger than this. You can purchase a specially-formulated house cleaner to remove those tough stains. However, if your window frames still appear oxidized, you may want to consider repainting them to keep them looking their best.

 Clean Your Window Screens

If your screens are just a little bit dusty, all you need to do is take a lint roller to them. However, if they require a deeper cleaning, you’ll need to pop them off from the frame and do the following:

  1. Mix together a bit of dish soap and water in a bucket.
  2. Take a scrub brush and dip it in the soapy water. Use it to scrub the dirt off of the screen.
  3. Rinse the screens with warm water and put them back in their place after they’ve dried.

Use The Right Wipe

Everyone agrees that using paper towels to dry off your windows is not a good idea as it leaves traces of lint behind. However, not everyone is in agreement as to what’s the best option to use. Many cleaning gurus prefer using newspaper to wipe their windows dry. Many others prefer using a microfiber cloth because it’s reusable, ultra-absorbent, and leaves the glass free of streaks.

Make And Use Your Own Glass Cleaner

To make a solution for cleaning the inside of your windows, Good Housekeeping recommends combining two cups of water, ½ cup white or cider vinegar, and ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol with a 70% concentration. Generously spray this formula on your windows and use a squeegee to clean off the excess. Next, wipe the glass dry and shine with a microfiber cloth.

Because the outside of your windows may be much dirtier than the inside, you may want to use soap and water to wash them, as opposed to the above vinegar solution. Simply mix dish soap and water together in a bucket, and use it to soap up your exterior windows.

Reach Up High With A Mop

When you need to reach up high to clean your exterior windows that seem unreachable, use a simple sponge mop to soap up the area. Next, rinse the windows with your garden hose. To finish, use the squeegee side of the mop to remove the excess water and stop water spots from forming.

Use A Rain Repellent

To keep your windows looking great for months to come, try applying a rain repellent to them after you’ve finished cleaning them. You may locate a rain repellent by searching in your local auto parts store as rain repellents are typically used on car windows. A rain repellent will work equally well on your windows at home. All you need to do is apply the rain repellent to a small, folded, dry cloth and, then, spread it onto the exterior of your windows using a firm, circular motion. Don’t be surprised if you see a slight haze for a little bit as it simply needs time to dry. The end result is that when it rains, the water will bead up and roll off of your windows with ease.

How To Avoid Streaks

According to home improvement expert Bob Vila, the best way to avoid having streaks left behind on your windows is to switch up your movements when wiping off the cleanser. For example, you might start out making circular motions and finish by making several vertical and horizontal motions. If you still find a few streaks afterward, simply take a clean chalkboard eraser and use it to buff out any streaks for a clean, bright finish.

Final Thoughts

Experts from a Cincinnati window cleaning company recommend cleaning the outside of your windows twice a year, such as in the fall and in the spring. This will actually help your windows last longer. Hard water, oxidation, and acid can take a toll on your windows, so cleaning them regularly can help to boost their longevity.

College Football Spirit with Dr Pepper® + DIY Photo Booth Tutorial

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #FootballFanGame #FiredUpFans

Saturdays in the fall is football day at our house.  Each week you’ll find us wearing our favorite sports apparel, chowing down on some yummy football food, and of course, watching football and showing our team spirit.  As the season grows near, I’m getting my shopping list ready so I can buy all the food and supplies we’ll need for a little homegating.  A few items we could not live without include Dr Pepper®, Kingsford® Original Charcoal, and Hidden Valley® Original Ranch® Dressing!  Today I’m here to show you how we do football, and I’ve also got a tutorial for DIY Photo Booth that can help make your football party fun and unique!

I’ve always been a huge fan of Dr Pepper and am happy that it is the official drink of college football fans and has been part of college football for over 25 years.

And apart from drinking the Dr Pepper, you can also use it as a marinade for your favorite meat or serve it up in some delicious Dr Pepper Floats.

You can purchase Dr Pepper in the can drink aisle at your local Walmart.  Be on the look out for special college football packaging!

The grill is a staple in our home.  We use it at least once a week, and it’s great for making some of our favorite football foods like pulled pork, grilled chicken, hamburgers, and hot wings.

My husband is our resident grill master! I can always count on him to grill up some delicious meats for game day. He loves the Kingsford brand and says it is the only thing he will use on a charcoal grill. The product is made in the USA with 100% natural North American ingredients.

We purchase our Kingsford Original Charcoal at Walmart.  Look for it in the lawn and garden department, along with other Kingsford varieties like Kingsford Charcoal with Applewood as well as varieties with Hickory, Pecan, Cherrywood, and Mesquite. Check your local store to see if grocery pick up is available for your convenience.

Hidden Valley Ranch is the perfect addition to salads, veggies, meats, crackers, and even pizza!

Of course, it’s not a party or even a regular day at my house unless I am taking pictures!  I’m the Queen of Picture Taking and I’m always walking around taking pictures of people, animals, or just random every day things!

To make more professional photos of our son, I have a very simple DIY photo booth, and this set up works great at parties for a little decoration and for a spot where your guests can take their own fun photos!  I like to place ours in our kitchen because it has the best natural light.

Supplies / Tools

32 ft of 3/4″ wide PVC pipe

(4) 3/4″ PVC T Pieces (slip on, not threaded)

(2) 3/4″ PVC Elbow Pieces (slip on, not threaded)

PVC Pipe cutters

Additional Supplies:

Clasps / Clips to hang backdrop

Backdrop and photo props – You can purchase cheap or expensive backdrops, but I usually use every day items like blankets, tablecloths, curtains, and shower curtains.

Note: The measurements in this tutorial will give you a backdrop that is 4 foot across.  The small booth set up is 40 inches high, and the large booth is 70 inches high.  If you need for your booth to accommodate taller people, you will obviously need to adjust the lengths you cut on the pipe.

Directions:

Use your PVC Pipe Cutters to cut your pipe into pieces as follows:

6 – 30 inch pieces

2 – 4 ft pieces

2 – 40 inch pieces

To assemble, take 2 of the 30 inch pieces and place them in either side of a T-joint.  Repeat with 2 other 30 inch pieces.  These will be the bottom of the base.  Next take a 40 inch piece and place it in the other side of the T joint.  Repeat with other 40 inch piece.  This gives you the bottom and the lower half of the sides.  Next add another T joint to the top of each 40 inch piece.  Take one of your 4 foot pieces and use it to connect your two sides.  This will give you the small assembly seen above.

If you are just doing a photo booth for small kids, you can hang a backdrop from this and you are ready to go.  (It can also accommodate teens and adults who are seated.)

To complete the large set up, take your other two 30 inch pieces and add them to either side.  Then add an elbow joint to either side.  Next use your other 4 ft piece to connect the two

sides.  This will complete the large assembly.  Now you are ready to hang up a backdrop, get out your props, and have some fun.

With a photo booth like this your friends and family can take professional looking photos in front of a fun scene.  It will help them commemorate the day, and it is a lot of fun for one and all!

How To Profit From DIY Upcycling

The trend of upcycling looks like it’s here to stay, and presuming you’re even a little bit handy when it comes to DIY, upcycling offers a creative, cheap and environmentally friendly way to add a personal touch of character and depth to your home.

There are significant environmental benefits to upcycling, as it minimises the volume of waste being sent to landfill whilst also reducing the need for raw materials (such as wood) which leads to a reduction in air and water pollution, less deforestation, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The social benefits of producing your own items are significant, as upcycling creates a sense of accomplishment and pride whilst being a fantastic channel for self-expression and creativity; the end result being a world away from the mass produced machine made products you would find in most modern homes.  Upcycled products add a layer of depth and character that machine made products rarely contribute toward.

Okay, so we know that upcycling is a cool trend that clearly adds value to one’s home, but is there any money to be made in upcycling from a commercial perspective, and if so, what do you need to get started?

Well, in short, the answer is yes.  With sites like etsy boasting over 30 million items for sale that are hand crafted (some of which upcycled) by people just like you – the time to make money from upcycling has never been better!  This article is going to sum up the five fundamental aspects you require to profit from upcycling.

RAW MATERIALS

To upcycle, you need to start with something.  This can become a fun scavenger hunt whether that’s roaming around the beach, through thrift stores, or even dumpster diving!

DIY TOOLS

The first thing you’re going to need are some tools, as there’s a limit to what anyone can achieve without the correct tools, particularly a decent saw.  In a recent article, Total Nerds compared the latest circular saws looking at the contrast between circular saws and table saws.  In addition, a decent sewing machine can come in very handy if you are working with fabric.

DIGITAL PRESENCE

The majority of things you are going to sell will be sold via the internet – in particular sites like etsy.com offer a wonderful opportunity for makers to tout their wares, eBay is a huge marketplace, Amazon has some exceptional technology to connect you with the right buyers, and shopify makes selling anything super simple.

CAPTIVATING PHOTOGRAPHS

You’ll want to capture your item in the best light, and one of the most effective ways to do that is to frame it within a suitable context that makes people want to buy – in particular, this context should be one of aspiration and luxury.

A NICHE

Having a niche that you become known for is a great way to position yourself as a boutique leader within a particular subsection of the market; as an example, perhaps your theme is focused on driftwood.  You could take that one step further and focus solely on driftwood mirrors, but the point is, the more well known you become for producing top quality items within a particular category the more recommendations you will get; meaning the more money you will make.

4 Handy Plumbing Tips for Homeowners

Being a homeowner can be a great joy but also quite a headache. You never know when a problem will surface which is why it is a good idea to identify professionals before you need them. This way, you can have them on speed dial in case a problem was to arise. However, sometimes the problem is not that easy or there is not extra room in the budget to hire someone to come over and fix the issue. There are times that as a homeowner, you have to get your hands dirty and do the work yourself. This article will provide some handy plumbing tips for new homeowners.

Turn off the water. If you notice a leak and you want to explore the problem, be sure to turn the water off to the area. This can save you from adding to the problem with additional leakage. This will also allow you to look for the leak without worrying about getting soaking wet or wasting additional water.

Fix the running toilet. We have all been there, whether you have lived in an apartment or in your own home, it is inevitable that you will experience a running toilet at one time or another. Before trying to fix the toilet, make sure that it is not clogged with debris, toilet paper, or waste. Once you have confirmed that the toilet is clear, lift the lid off of the tank. Check the flapper to make sure that it is still intact and in good condition. Believe it or not, they do wear out from time to time and need to be replaced. Another thing to look for is if the water is very high in the tank. If the water is high, turn the valve off that is below the tank and take off the rubber flapper. Dry the area and install a new flapper.

De-clogging drains. A clogged drain can happen to anyone. Over time soap builds up in a drain along with hair, lint, or other debris. A clogged drain can be easily remedied by purchasing a plastic snake-like tool from your local hardware store. Simply place the snake in the drain and dig out the contents that are causing the clog. It may be tempting to dump drain-o or other plumbing solutions down the drain but try to avoid doing this as it can have a negative effect on your plumbing.

Take good care of your garbage disposal. It may sound strange but your garbage disposal can malfunction or quit working at any moment. Take care of your disposal by cleaning it often with garbage disposal cleaning solutions that can be found at your local hardware or grocery store. In addition, keep silverware, bottle caps, and other metal objects out of the drain as they can damage the blades or cause the disposal to not work at all.

If you have tried all of these tips are you are still having trouble, we recommend this plumber that can help you out.
