Now that Christmas is over I wanted to send out some thank yous. First I want to thank everyone who’s visited my blog throughout the holiday season, and I want to thank you for all your lovely comments. And I hope you will all visit again soon.

Next I want to thank everyone who submitted their food or crafts to the Christmas festival and everyone who gave me permission to use their ideas for the festival.

I’d also like to thank everyone who hosted holiday events on their blog. I had a lot of fun participating and visiting with other participants.

New Christmas Poll & Call for Submissions

I’ve just a posted a new Christmas poll. You’ll find it near the top of your screen, in the left hand side bar. Being in choirs for many years, I’ve always loved Christmas music, so the poll question is, What is your favorite Christmas song?

Also, I’d like to take this opportunity to ask for submissions/contributions for the Christmas festival. Each week I’d like to have a post that features ideas from other blogs & websites. My posts will contain links to the featured idea/post, as well as a description of what the links is, and possibly a photo from the post if applicable, with your permission, of course.

I hope some of you will decide to participate. This will make things more fun. We’ll be able to have a variety of good content, and by getting featured here, you can get more visitors to your blog/website. And if you’re already posting Christmas ideas anyway, you may as well take 2 minutes to send me your link.

I’ll be looking around the internet & blogosphere for ideas to feature, but I would much rather feature ideas from people that read my blog and people that actually volunteer to be featured.

Here are the rules and parameters to follow, if you’d like to be featured.

1. Write a post on any idea you have for Christmas. (if you don’t celebrate Christmas, but celebrate some other holiday instead, you can also send me a link to those ideas.)

  • It can be a recipe…dessert, appetizer, casserole, candy…anything goes.
  • It could also be a Christmas craft or decoration or scrapbook/card project.
  • The recipe/craft/decoration doesn’t have to be something you’ve made yourself, though that would be nice. I’ll accept it as long as it’s something that I think other visitors to my blog would like.
  • Any other Christmas tips and ideas are acceptable as well.
  • I’ll also accept ideas that may not be yours, such as a blog post or website that you’ve found and enjoyed. Just let me know if the link is not yours so that I can get proper permission, if needed.
  • If you have any personal Christmas stories, favorite memories, or a wish list you’ve posted, you can send those in as well.

2. If you’d like to be featured in my Christmas festival, email me at simplysweethome@hotmail.com. Type “Christmas Festival” in the subject box. In your email, include your first name, your website name, a quick description of your idea, and a link to your idea/tip, etc. (This will help me to sort through submisions, and ensure that I link to the proper post/idea.)

3. I’ll be accepting submissions through December 21. Here’s a tentative schedule of events:

  • Dec 1-6 I’ll be featuring Decorations/Crafts/Cards/etc.
  • Dec 7-13 I’ll be featuring recipes.
  • December 14-20 I’ll be featuring simple ideas/tips, misc ideas (could be more recipes/crafts/decor, if need be)
  • December 21-25 I’ll be featuring a Christmas meme and stories/wish lists.

4. If you miss the deadlines for the first 2 weeks, you can still send in your idea, and I’ll post it during the week of the 14th or the 21st. I want to give everyone a chance to share his/her idea.

As you can see, Decorations/Crafts are up first, so if you have anything you’d like featured, send me your link over the next few days, otherwise, it won’t be used until the week of the 14th. (and sorry I didn’t post up this call for submissions till now.) If you have any recipes or anything else that you’ve posted and would like me to feature, you can go ahead and send those in as well. Throughout the month I’ll post up reminders so that everybody can get their submissions in.

Hope to hear from you all! Have a great weekend!

The One Year Anniversary of Simply Sweet Home & The Recipe of the Week: Coca Cola Cake

Greetings everyone! It was a very busy week for me. No time for posting, as I was out job searching. I had some meetings with a couple of agencies this week and have sent some applications to a few places as well. Aside from that, I’ve been getting some stuff out of storage at my dad’s house this week and am still trying to find places for some odds and ends stuff at our house. And then of course there’s the usual errands to run as well. There just aren’t enough hours in the day!

But no matter what, I had to find time to post today, because it is the one year anniversary of the blog. Yea! It almost doesn’t seem like it’s been a year, but internet time stamps never lie (not to mention all the Halloween posts I did last year).

So in celebration of the blog’s one year anniversary/birthday, I made a yellow cake with chocolate icing. (Mine and my husband’s favorite) My grandmother used to make a Coca-Cola cake, which was a chocolate cake with chocolate icing. I’ve made the cake myself and it’s delicious, but as my husband prefers the yellow cake by far, I usually just make the coca-cola icing and put it on a yellow cake.

For this special post, I’m featuring the pictures of the cake that I made last night for the occasion, and in case anyone wants to try it, I’ve included the classic recipe straight from my grandmother’s old cookbook for Coca Cola Cake. Enjoy!

And finally I want to say thank you to everyone who reads/subscribes/comments at Simply Sweet Home. I really enjoy writing and sharing my ideas and having this creative outlet, and it thrills my soul to know that there are people out there who are reading it and who enjoy my posts. Thanks again!

Coca-Cola Cake:
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1 cup butter
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup Coca-Cola
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows (optional)

Sift sugar and flour together. Boil butter, cocoa, and Coca-Cola. Pour over flour and sugar. Dissolve soda in buttermilk and pour in with the above ingredients. Then add eggs, vanilla, and marshmallows. Pour into greased 13X9 inch pan and bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

Chocolate Icing:
1/2 cup butter
3 tablespoons cocoa
6 tablespoons Coca-cola
1 box confectioners’ sugar
1 teaspoon broken pecans (optional)

Bring to boil the butter, cocoa, and Coca-Cola. Add the sugar, vanilla and pecans. Pour over cake in the pan while icing is hot.

My Week In Review

I’m happy to say that our week went fairly well. The drive got a little crazy as we were going through the rains of Faye. It was the worst weather either my husband or I remember ever driving through, and to top it off, it was dark. We were driving about 45 mph on the interstate and saw several wrecks along the way and actually stopped at one time because I couldn’t see the road at all and was getting scared. I’m still glad we didn’t wait until this weekend to come up. I hear that a lot of people in the gulf region of our state are headed north. There’s not a mandatory evacuation, and we’re not sure if Gustav will hit there or not, but either way, it’s good to have all of our stuff out ahead of time. And I’m happy that my husband and I aren’t sitting for hours in stand still traffic.

All in all, we had a pretty good week. I went to a job interview on Friday for a temporary position. I was very nervous about it, but it went pretty well. Not sure if I’ll get the job or not because I don’t have experience in the area which the position is for, but you never know.

As for the house, everything is looking good. In a lot of ways, it’s going to look like a new house when their done. Once the work is done, I’ll take some pictures and post them. I have a couple of “before” pictures that I’ll try to post as well. They were taken with a disposable camera rather than digital, so I’m sure how good they’ll look once scanned, but we shall see. Anyway the painting is almost finished, and they should begin putting in the new floors sometime this week. We’ll still have to do some cosmetic work to the outside of the house and to the outbuilding. But we can do all of that after we’ve moved in. (and boy, am I ready to move in!)

In thinking about moving, doing home improvements, and doing a little decorating and organizing, I’ve already got a ton of new post ideas. And hopefully in the next few days or week, I’ll get back to doing some regular posts on these very topics. It’s strange how you get so used to posting that you actually miss it, when you don’t get to do it. I also miss my laptop and my highspeed connection. (Right now I’m using my old computer which is on a dial up connection and is very slow!) Can’t wait to get into the new place and get back in the groove!

200th Post – We’re Movin’ On Up!

Well, I’ve reached new heights on my little blog. I am now up to my 200th post. It’s a small step for blogs but a pretty big step for my little blog. Considering that I had only just started reading blogs last year, and I didn’t really put a lot of thought into my decision to start a blog, and I didn’t even know if I’d enjoy blogging or not, I’d say things have gone pretty well. I only hope that they continue to get even better in the future.

I thought for a while about what I would write for this post…Should it be just a regular everyday post? Should I do something special for it? Finally I decided that since this is a “milestone” post, it would be the perfect time for me to talk about future milestones on the blog and the milestones going on in my life.

The Blog. – First , the blog. Not only is this the 200th post, but in about 2 months, I’ll be celebrating the one year anniversary of my first post, which is very exciting for me…I can’t believe it’s been almost a year! I’m already beginning to think about how I will celebrate for the occasion, and that will, of course, include a big anniversary post. Additionally I’ve been thinking of different things I can do to revamp and make the blog better, so I’ve been coming up with some ideas to restructure, organize, and try to make it more focused and cohesive (for lack of a better word). I’m also planning to get a *new* design/template for the website. I’ve been looking at a lot of blog designs to try to get a good idea of what I’m looking for, and before the year is out, I hope to have a total makeover for the site. And I have a few ideas for some future projects that I think everyone will like.

Movin’ On Up (literally) – Next, an even greater milestone….I’ll soon be moving in to a new (to me) house! Yay! More details to come.

New Poll: What is your favorite topic?

For the past week, I’ve been doing some planning and organizing for the future of the blog.

Among other things, I’ve decided to try and be a little more interactive with the polls. For starters, I’ve moved the poll to the topic right of the screen so that it is more visable to new visitors. Secondly, I plan to change the question more often than I have in the past. And in some cases, your responses to the polls will have an affect on the content of the blog. The question that’s currently posted is an example of that.

I actually posted this question a few weeks back, but I wanted to edit it, and it won’t let you edit it once someone has voted, so I removed it and re-added it. So if you’ve already voted, then you should vote again because your response was erased.

The question is: What is your favorite topic? (On this blog or on blogs in general, what do you like to read about?)

The answer choices are as follows:
Recipes
Organizing
Saving Money
Crafts
Housekeeping
Home Decor

I picked these answer choices, because I think of these as the core subjects of Simply Sweet Home. But obviously some of these subjects are featured more than others, and sometimes I wonder, what do people really think of my topics? Do they even like crafts and decor? What about the recipes, maybe they prefer less desserts and more casseroles….? Anyway, I’ll look over any answers that I get to the poll, and this will help me to decide if I want to do more posts on a particular topic.

Personally I love posting the recipes. I also love organizing & information about saving money (though I don’t post on these subjects as much), but I definitely want to focus more on these 2 in the future, and perhaps some of the others as well.

But I’d love to know what you think, so please vote in the poll. And if you have any specific ideas or suggestions, feel free to leave a comment.

My Week Away

Hello everyone. I’m sorry there was only one post last week, but I had to go out of town. We had planned to go out of town for Mother’s Day weekend, but I had some business come up, including a dental emergency, so we left on Tuesday and were gone the whole week. In fact, we just got back Monday evening.

All in all, we had a pretty good trip. As I said, I had a dental emergency that needed to be handled. (Even though I’ve moved I still go to my old dentist b/c he knows my history. Plus, we plan on moving back within the next year or 2, so it seemed silly to swap) Long story short, I had an infection which needed a root canal, and then I had a cracked feeling that needed to be replaced. As you can imagine, it was just a barrel of laughs!

But after that was over, and after attending to some other business, I got to spend a few days with the family, which was fun. My neice had a chorus concert, so I was lucky enough to be up there for that. I was in chorus myself in school, and I had a great passion for it, and I still love attending the concerts. Anyway, it was a lovely show. The kids sounded good, and they were clearly having a great time.

And to top off the week, my cousin’s wife had her first baby on Mother’s Day. My cousin is one of 2 boys, and they’re both in their 30’s, and neither of them has had a child up until now. So they were all extremely excited to welcome little Elizabeth Rose into the world.

And of course, I was so busy with everything last week, I had absolutely no time to post or do any good planning for this week either. But I’m compiling some ideas in my head as I type, and I’ll have out at least 2 or 3 posts in the next few days, so stay tuned!

I hope you all had a good weekend and a great Mother’s Day! Talk to you soon!

Need a Virtual Assistant or a Writer? I’m hiring myself out.

Hey guys. For a while, I’ve been thinking a lot about home businesses. I don’t have kids yet, but I do have hopes of being a stay at home mom. My mother stayed home with me when I was a kid, and I feel that it’s important, and it’s just something I want to do.

At the same time, I’d like the opportunity to make money. Money isn’t everything, but in this day and age, it’s just about the closest thing to air. So over the past several months I’ve been contemplating & considering different business ideas. I’ve come up with several ideas, some of which I may try if I can get the money & “stuff” I need (& assuming I have the time). But for right now I’ve decided to try this one.

I enjoy writing and I’ve had a lot of experience with writing & I’ve also worked in business for several years, so I decided to set up a website (actually a blog) to market my skills as a writer and an virtual assistant. I’m still in the process of working out all the details and deciding exactly what I’m going to do. (in fact I haven’t even posted all my virtual assistant information yet) But I wanted to go ahead and sort of introduce the concept here and hopefully get some input from you guys.

For more details on this, visit http://simplysweetconsultants.blogspot.com

If you need help with anything for your home office, your small business, or your personal blog/website, I’d love for you to hire me. Or if you know somebody that’s looking to hire a virtual assistant (for online or offline tasks), a copywriter, or anything along those lines, please send them my way. (and I’ll come up with some way to thank you later!)

When I have more details up on the website, I’ll let you know. In the meantime, I invite you to check out and let me know what you think.
