Creating a Stylized Outdoor Space – Part 2 #Digin

Stylized Outdoor SpaceThis is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

It’s time to #digin to part 2 of our series on Creating a Stylized Outdoor Space!  This week we will be talking about the things that people should take into account when determining what furniture best fits their lifestyle, and we will talk about how and why different sets work better in different outdoor living spaces.

When buying outdoor furniture, there’s a lot to think about.  Obviously you should think about what kind of space you have.  Is the furniture for a deck? A gazebo? The yard?  You should also think about what kind of environment the furniture will be in.  Will it be exposed to rain or covered?  What kind of sun exposure will it have? And of course, you want to think about what you will be using the space for.

Hampton Bay 7 Piece

In my previous post, I mentioned that I would use my own outdoor space for cook outs or as a place to sit and chat with friends and family.  Something like the Hampton Bay Fall River 7-Piece Patio Dining Set with Moss Cushions would be great. It would also be nice to have a space to set up the computer for blogging.

Maybe you have a pool and will be hosting pool parties this summer, in which case you should probably have a dining table with chairs, and perhaps other chairs and loungers to go around the pool.

Or maybe you host quiet gatherings and teas, or will just be using the space to relax; in which case a love seat with a couple of chairs and ottoman or small side tables might be more appropriate.

Or perhaps you just want a place to sit outside and read, and then all you really need is a chair and ottoman, and maybe a side table.   I love the one pictured above from Martha Stewart.

You should also take these purposes into account in terms of quality and your budget.  For personal every day use, you may find it more feasible to buy something higher quality that will last longer, and then buy less expensive chairs to bring in when you have guests.

Apart from the types of outdoor living furniture that you have to do choose from for your various activities, there is also the materials to consider.

  • Aluminum furniture is light weight and durable.  It doesn’t rust but forms a hard material called aluminum oxide which protects it and can be cleaned with soap and water.  Aluminum is also a good choice because it does not conduct heat well.
  • Steel is heavier and responds to temperature.  You can use modern primers and paints to keep it looking good and protect it against rust with car wax.
  • All weather wicker is handwoven, made of resin, and is very versatile and durable, and it comes in natural looking colors.
  • Wrought iron is heavy, sturdy, and is rust resistent.
  • Wood furniture comes in a variety of kinds. Tique has an oil that acts as a preservative.  It is durable. It will weather if left untreated but takes polish and varnish well.
  • Resin is an inexpensive type of furniture and would be great choice if you are on a budget.  Made of today’s polymers, it is far superior to plastic, resistant to breakage, and comes in lots of colors.
