As a new mom I am very thankful that I have the chance to stay home and raise my son. As I do this, our family is effectively taking a pay cut, but I feel that it is worth it for my son to be raised by ME and not strangers. And luckily we live in an online world which has taught me how to me more productive and allows me a few avenues to make money from home. Today I will discuss a few ways in which Moms just like me can earn an income from home while staying home to raise their kids.
Content Creation and Writing
Content is king! There are so many ways to make money through the content you produce. Whether you are a freelance writer, photographer, or videographer, there are many ways to use your voice and talents to make money.
1. Blogging
I’ve been blogging for over 10 years. I make a modest income by writing sponsored articles and adding advertisements to my site. Blogging also allows you an avenue to make money in other ways like selling your own products or affiliate marketing (discussed below).
2. Copywriting and Writing for Crowdsourced Sites
If you are a writer but don’t have a website of your own, you could write for a crowdsourced site. I used to submit articles on Helium. I received money from ad revenues that ran on articles I had published, and I also earned money by winning some of their article writing contests. Some sites will also give you a direct payout for submitting articles.
There are also sites that allow you to earn money by copywriting; you would would write things like product descriptions and advertising copy.
3. Photography and Video
Pictures and video are becoming more and more in demand. Companies are now giving away free products and paying people to produce content on sites like Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram. Making videos on Youtube also allows you to make money through ad revenues.
If you enjoy this type of work, you can grow your business through youtube marketing.
4. Freelancing
Sites like Fiverr allow you to market your services. Companies post jobs and pay you to write an article, take photography, graphic design, and more!
Selling
5. Selling Handmade Items
If you are a crafter or artist, you can make money buy selling your items on Etsy. I have a small shop where I sell hand stamped jewelry on Etsy. Your operation costs to get started are very low, and Etsy has great tools to help you create a personalized storefront and shopping experience for customers to grow your business. There are also a number of other sites that allow you to sell your stuff. Shopify is the choice of many people who want an ecommerce site; they have a lot of great features and great Shopify plugins.
6. Affiliate Marketing
Many companies, large and small, pay commissions for sending customers to their site. I use my blog to link to affiliate sites, but if you don’t have a blog or website, you can link to affiliates through your social media accounts. Just open an affiliate account with the retailer of your choice and share products that you love with friends and followers.
7. Selling Your Stuff
I wrote an article last year on ways to sell your stuff. The article suggests a number of websites, apps, and other means for selling your unwanted items. If you have a knack for this type of business, you could consider buying things to resell. Thrift stores and yard sales are a great place to find cheap items that are actually worth money. I’ve met many people who make money this way! They purchase things they are an expert in, anything from knives and tools to clothes, books, vinyl records, and antiques, and they make a great profit.
8. Virtual Assisting and Consulting
If you are not the creative type and you hate selling, but have other great skills like bookkeeping or transcription, consider becoming a virtual assistant, consultant, or medical coder. Many small businesses don’t have the money to pay a full time worker and are happy to pay for part time and contract work. You can get paid to type up a business letter, enter figures in an Excel spreadsheet, do accounting work. If you have a particular field of expertise, you could also get paid to edit a book or consult on a project.
Most of the certified CPAs and Bookkeepers earn money by providing virtual bookkeeping services. Tools such as QuickBooks Enterprise Hosting on a Hosted Citrix VDI accelerate these processes to work remotely from anywhere on any device in a multi-user environment.
Teaching
If you have a degree or a field of expertise, you can make money through teaching.
9. Online Teaching and Tutoring
If you have a degree, many schools (both offline and online) are looking to hire people to teach their online courses or tutor their students.
You can also freelance and offer your tutoring services. College students, professionals, and parents are always looking for good tutors. You just have to sign up at a credible tutoring site and advertise your services or answer an ad of someone who’s looking for tutoring services.
10. Selling Your Own Courses, Ebooks and Webinars
You can also teach by selling your own courses, ebooks, and webinars. Technically this is another form of content creation, but it requires true knowledge of a subject and desire to share this knowledge. If you’ve written several articles or tutorials on a subject, then you probably have a enough material to put together a good Ebook or course. You just have to decide on the topic and goal of your book or course; then put your materials together and package them in a meaningful way.
If you a lot of experience with video, then a webinar or video course may be more your speed. Just look at some of the topics you’ve done videos on in the past and find a way to package the content together in a meaningful way.
Of course, there is almost an unlimited number of ways to make money from home. These are just a few ideas to get you started!
